I wondered on to this forum while looking for what to do about a weak bottle lamb.
I raise sheep in NE Ohio and have had some kind of sheep since 1997. Now, I have 14 registered Icelandic sheep and my husband has a mixture of others, including a few purebred Tunis my daughter shows and our new Texel ram. We have a total of 30 sheep plus two 10 day old Suffolk lambs that weren’t expected until warmer weather – we apparently bought the mother bred. One is the bottle lamb who may not be around much longer, but her brother is doing well with their mother.
Our farm is only 5 acres, but besides the sheep we have two gardens, a small orchard and some berry bushes and we sell what we don’t use at a local farm cooperative and farmers market.
We also have a guard llama, 2 barn cats, 3 dogs, a pair of Naragansett turkeys and some chickens. I have 7 laying hens including 4 purebred Marans with 3 roosters who live with the sheep over the winter to give the hens a break. We hope to have our poultry raise chicks this spring and we plan to eat at least one of the roosters since 3 is really more than we need.
My husband and I work full time, but we both love having the farm to come home to, despite the extra work. My kids are now at ages (12 and 15) where they can help more and enjoy doing 4H animal projects. My daughter prefers dogs and my son likes the sheep. We usually take a few sheep to our local fair.
